How To Determine An Edible Plant
¤ Plants are a very valuable source of food, but care must be taken when eating them. Especially if the plant is unknown to you. Here is a lengthy, but safe way to test a plant source to be edible.
¤ First of all, make sure that there is enough of the plant your testing to sustain you.
¤ Test only one part of the of a potential food source at a time.
¤ Break the plant into its basic components: leaves, stem, buds, flowers, and roots.
Do not eat for 8 hours before starting this test.
¤ In the mean time, test for contact poisoning by placing the piece of the plant you are testing in the bend of your elbow. Usually 15 minutes is enough time to allow for a reaction.
¤ During the test period, take nothing by mouth except water and the plant being tested.
¤ Select a small portion on a single component and prepare it as you would eat it.
¤ Before putting the sample into your mouth, touch it to your lips to test for burning, itching, or numbness.
¤ After a few minutes if there is no reaction, chew a small portion of the plant for 15 minutes but DO NOT SWALLOW.
¤ If no burning, itching, or numbness occurs, swallow the food.
¤ Wait 8 hours. If any ill effects occur, induce vomiting and drink a lot of water.
¤ If no ill effects occur, prepare about a cup of the plant the same way you did before and consume it. Wait another 8 hours.
¤ If no ill effects occur, the plant is safe for eating.
** DO NOT EAT any unknown plant with the following characteristics:
milky sap
mushroom like shape
resemble onion or garlic.
sap that turns black after it is exposed to the air
How To Make Survival Water
The human body can endure several days with out food, but very few days without water. Unfortunately, the water from the local stream or river made be full of harmful bacteria and pollution. This water would do more harm than good. If you are able, try to bring water for your trip. If you find yourself without drinkable water, here is a way to acquire the water necessary for survival.
You will need a digging tool, sheet of plastic, and a 3 foot tube or hose, and a container for the construction of the ground water still. This should be done in a temperate climate with foliage or grass covered ground.
Dig a bowl-shaped hole approximately 3 feet across and 2 feet down. Dig a sump in the center of the hole. The size of this hole will depend upon the size of container you have available. The container should stand upright. Anchor the tube to the inner base of the container Extend the length of the tubing over the edge of the hole. Place the plastic sheet over the entire hole and cover the edges with the soil you removed Place a rock in the center of the plastic sheet Allow the plastic sheet to lower into the hole until it is about 1 foot below ground level. Make sure apex of the plastic sheet is directly over the container. Use the tubing as a straw to drink the water condensing the next morning.
Navigation During Day & Night
SHADOW TIP METHOD ( DAY ) : This method can be used anytime the sun is bright enough for a stick to cast a shadow. First place a small straight stick (1-2 feet long) into the ground so that it will cast the sun's shadow. Mark the end of the stick's shadow with a small stone for example. Wait five minutes and again mark the end of the stick's shadow. Do this for at least 20 minutes. You will discover that the tips you marked will be in a straight line. Now standing with your toes on the marks and the vertical stick in front of you, you will be facing roughly south. This is the method you use if you are in the northern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere, you will be facing roughly north.
CELESTIAL NAVIGATION ( NIGHT ) : On a clear night many stars are visible, and if you walk towards the North Star you will be walking northward. The North Star is the last star in the handle of Ursa Minor (Little Dipper), but this constellation is sometimes difficult to see. The easiest way to locate the North Star is to use the constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper). A straight line from the two bottom stars (pointers) will point to the North Star. The distance to the North Star is about 5 times the distance between the pointers.
FIRST AID Reservation
DOES IT HURT ?
The evaluation of an injury is time critical. Knowing a few simple steps may save someone's life, including your own.
These ABC's are in order of priority. Click for details.
A is for Airway: Open the airway to restore breathing.
B is for Bleeding: Stop the bleeding and protect the wound.
C is for shock: Check and treat for shock.
A is for Airway...
If you come across a person who appears to be hurt you will need to check for responsiveness by asking them "Are you OK?" while gently shaking them. You will quickly discover if they are asleep or unconscious. If they are unconscious and not breathing, call for help and position the casualty on their back.
B is for Bleeding
There are three basic types of dressings applied to a bleeding wound. These depend upon the severity of the wound.
Dressing: This dressing is applied to a superficial to moderate wound.
Pressure dressing: When the wound fails to stop bleeding after an initial dressing has been put on, apply pressure to the wound for five minutes with the use of an addition dressing over the wound. Wrap another dressing around the original and the pressure and tie a non-slip knot over all three. This will keep the pressure on the wound and stop the bleeding. If possible, elevate the wound above the heart.
Tourniquet: Should this pressure dressing fail, the very last resort is to apply a tourniquet. Apply the tourniquet at least 2-4 inches above the wound towards the heart. Once a tourniquet has been applied, only a medical professional may take it off.
C is for shock
One of the body's techniques when dealing with trauma is to go into shock. Shock is usually the result of:
- Significant blood loss
- Heart failure
- Dehydration
- Severe painful blows to the body
- Severe burns to the body
- Severe wound infections
- Severe allergic reactions
- Insect or snake bites
In order to treat or prevent shock use the following steps:
1: Lay the casualty on their back unless this will cause more damage.
2: Elevate the height of their feet higher than the level of the heart. Be careful NOT to do this step if the casualty has an unsplinted broken leg, head injury, or abdominal wound.
3: Loosen the clothing at the neck, waist, or wherever it may be binding.
4: Prevent chilling or overheating. The key is to maintain body temperature (1).
5: Calm the casualty.
6: Seek medical aid.
7: DO NOT give the casualty anything to eat or drink.
8: If you must leave the casualty to get help, turn their head to prevent chocking should they vomit (2).
