Himachal Pradesh is the most beautiful state having different type of terrain, climate and heights. Which has given birth to variety of vegetation, wild animals and birds at different places and levels. The mountain ranges in the state rise from 400 meters to 6800 meters that have variety of forests like sal, rhododendron, oak, fir, deodar, birch, and pines. These forests shelter for large number of wild animal and birds. Himachal has two national parks and 29 wild life sanctuaries.
The state abounds in wildlife among which some rare species like the musk deer, ibex, thar, Himalayan brown bear and snow leopard are still found. A wide variety of pheasants, western tragopan a rare treat, monals, are worth a trip even though at times it gets very difficult. The rivers offer ideal fishing grounds for trout and masheer.
Many of these sanctuaries located at higher ranges, though not easily accessible, having marvelous trekking routes and also has facilities for camping in the wild. The gushing streams fascinating alpine pasture and high snow covered peaks provide an eternal pleasure to the tourists.
Pin Valley National Park encompasses the Pin valley of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh is a typical cold desert. The Pin valley national park was constituted in 1984 to conserve and preserve the rare flora and fauna of the region. A considerable part of the area of this national park is covered by snow. The elevation of the National Park ranges from about 3,500 meters near Ka Dogri to more than 6,000 meters at its highest point. The Pin Valley national Park represents the biogeography of the Trans Himalayan cold desert with its characteristic flora and fauna. The Park forms the natural habitat of a number of endangered animals including Himalayan Ibex, Snow Leopard, Bharal, Wooly Hare, Tibetan Wolf, and Snow Cock. The apparently scanty vegetation in the Park contains many plant species of high conservation value. Prominent amongst these species are Ratanjot (Arnebia euchroma & A. benthamii), Salampanja (Dactylorhhiza hatageria), Somlata (Ephedra gerardiana), Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) and Ateesh (Aconitum heterophyllum). Wild rose (Rosa webbiana), with its gorgeous pink flowers and bright red fruit, provides a striking contrast to the otherwise dry surrounds.
DARANGHATI SANCTUARY: This sanctuary located in the upper area of Shimla District has undisturbed forest area with plenty of wildlife. Monal, Tragopan, Koklas and Kalij are the pheasants found here. The area also has Musk deer, Goral and Thar. There is a network of bridle paths and inspection paths in the sanctuary.
CHAIL SANCTUARY: Chail is a hill station visited by many tourists. The Deodar and Oak forests with grasslands around the township are the abode of wildlife. One can see Sambar, Goral and Cheer Pheasants at Blossom and Jhaja.Visitors are welcome to the Cheer pheasant breeding centre at both these places. Barking deer and Kalij in the forests are sure to meet and greet the visitors at dusk and dawn. Trekking from Chail to Gaura and Chail to Jhaja is common and rewarding as one is sure to see wildlife and beautiful snowy peaks.
CHURDHAR SANCTUARY: Churdhar peak, with height of 3647 meters is the highest peak in outer Himalayas. It is like a Oasis of Alpine area in a ocean of temperate forests. This is an excellent area for trekking during summer and early winters. The view from Churdhar peak is un-parallel. One is sure to come across a large number of multicolored and agile Monals in the adjoining forests. Trekking from Sarain and Pulbahal is tough but enjoyable. There is also a Bijjat temple at Sarain and a Shiv Temple at Churdhar.
